Singapore footballers struggle against 10-man Laos

Singapore footballers struggle against 10-man Laos

Singapore failed to get their SEA Games campaign off to a winning start after they could only muster a 1-1 draw against 10-man Laos at the Zayarthiri Stadium in Naypyidaw, Myanmar on Sunday night.

Courts Young Lions forward Sahil Suhaimi gave Singapore the lead in the 27th minute but substitute Khuanta Sivongthong’s 86th-minute equaliser prevented Aide Iskandar’s men from securing all three points.

Laos were reduced to 10 men after just two minutes after defender Saychon Khunsamnarn was shown a straight red card for a late challenge on LionsXII forward Shahfiq Ghani.

The Lions dominated possession after that but were struggling to find any rhythm in attack and hardly troubled the Laos goalkeeper.

But they did manage to break the deadlock in the 27th minute when Zulfahmi Arifin’s lob over the Laos defence was well controlled by Sahil, who then volleyed the ball into the bottom right corner.

Singapore set up camp in the Laotian half in the second 45 minutes but poor passing in the final third of the pitch prevented them from extending their lead.

Laos never stopped running and were rewarded for their hard work in the 86th minute when Sivongthong rose the highest to head a free-kick past Singapore goalkeeper Izwan Mahbud.

Singapore will next play Vietnam - who trounced Brunei 7-0 earlier Sunday - on December 10.

Alleged match-fixing ringleader to be held on detention order

Alleged match-fixing ringleader Dan Tan believed to be held on detention order

Dan Tan, the suspected ringleader of a football match-fixing syndicate, will not be getting out of jail anytime soon.

The 48-year-old Singaporean is believed to be among four alleged members of the syndicate who have been issued detention orders on Wednesday under the Criminal Law (Temporary Provisions) Act, which allows for them to be held by the police without trial. A fifth suspect has been issued a police supervision order in lieu of prison detention.

All five were among 14 suspects arrested on suspicion of being part of a global football match-fixing operation, during a raid conducted by the police and anti-graft officers on Sept 17.

The Home Affairs Ministry, without naming the five, confirmed in a statement earlier that detention orders were issued to four persons and a police supervision order given to one. The ministry also said that the remaining nine suspects - believed to include Tan's wife from China - are being investigated for corruption and have been released on bail.

Fandi wants to unearth the next ASEAN football star

Fandi wants to unearth the next ASEAN football star

Fresh from his recent stint as the head coach of Malaysian Super League side Johor Darul Takzim, Fandi Ahmad is now on a new quest.

The Singapore football legend wants to discover and develop the next footballing star of Southeast Asia and he wants to use his new academy - the F-17 Fandi Ahmad’s Academy of Football Excellence - to do so.

The 51-year-old Fandi unveiled his new football development project at a ceremony at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Saturday, which is a merger between the Fandi Ahmad Academy (FAA) and another football school, the Academy of Football Excellence.

The F-17 academy is open to kids as young as four, and will operate out of four locations - SAFRA Tampines, ITE College Central, Premier Pitch at Balestier Road, and Serangoon Gardens Secondary School.

Said Fandi: “The FAA has been successful in the last two years in proving our students’ football skills, and F-17 will continue to do so.

“We are also aiming to open more training centres around Singapore to improve accessibility to our training programmes.”

Apart from being a football school, the F-17 Academy also plans to develop promising talents who have the potential to go far and the right attitude into future stars.

These young footballers will be offered scholarships worth about S$10,000 each which will be used to sponsor overseas training stints for them, as well as other forms of support such as top coaching programmes, fitness trainers, sports nutritionists, physiotherapists, psychologists and counsellors, said Mizra Ismail, the director of F-17.

The Academy plans to offer up to 50-60 scholarships.

“Besides the scholarships, the main difference in F-17 is our integration with AFE, which will help us in our efforts to step up our talent-scouting, and push the good players up to our elite squad,” said Fandi.

The former Singapore skipper added that he plans to leverage on his experience and connections in Europe and other parts of the world to arrange overseas stints for the promising ones.

“Apart from Holland and Spain, I also have contacts in Chile and Argentina, and I will use them to arrange for trials and attachments. In fact, FC Groningen, the club I once played for in Holland, has already agreed to take some of my players under their wings for stints.”

When asked whether he would consider coaching overseas again, Fandi who has coached in Indonesia and Malaysia, said he is happy in Singapore and would like to stay put here for now.

“I have had some offers to coach Malaysia Super League teams, but I would like to stay in Singapore,” he said.

“I am happy with the work I am doing here now with F-17 and helping a lot of needy youths.”

Sports associations are being roped in for the annual Malay Language Month as part of efforts to engage the community to use the language.

The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) and the Silat Federation will be organising activities in conjunction with the month-long campaign.

LionsXII captain Shahril Ishak is one of the new faces named as language ambassador.

FAS' deputy director of development and planning Ridzal Saat, said: "I think it's quite apt that you have someone like Shahril, who is young, have a young family, trying to reach out to our fans through the language."

The Malay Language Month will be launched by Acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, Lawrence Wong at the Asian Civilisation Museum on September 7.

Singapore lose 0-2 to Oman in Asian Cup qualifier

Singapore lose 0-2 to Oman in Asian Cup qualifier

Newly-appointed coach for Singapore football national team, Bernd Stange from Germany, poses with the team jersey after a press conference in Singapore. (AFP/STR)

It was the first big test for the new coach of the Singapore national football team Bernd Stange, as his charges took on Oman in an Asian Cup qualifier at Jalan Besar Stadium on Wednesday.

The Lions had hoped to pull off an upset against their higher-ranked opponents, but they were beaten 2-0.

Singapore had promised attacking football and that was how they started.

Despite the possession by the host, Oman opened the scoring in the 14th minute as Qasim Said sprinted past the back line to slot it home.

Singapore could have equalised after earning a free kick when Shahril Ishak was fouled.

Qiu Li's shot, though, was wide.

And it got worse for the host, as Eid Mohammed put the visitors 2-up just before the break.

Singapore pressed hard to get back into the game in the second half but to no avail.

The game ended 2-0, with Oman collecting all three points.

For Singapore, it was a second defeat in Group A, after losing 0-4 to Jordan in February.

Inaugural FAM-FAS Championship Series postponed

Inaugural FAM-FAS Championship Series postponed

The inaugural FAM-FAS Championship Series has been postponed until next year.

The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) and the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) jointly decided on the postponement, citing tight domestic competition schedules.

Announced in July by the FAM, the series was to see a one-off match between Malaysia's and Singapore's league and cup champions of the previous season this month.

League champions Kelantan and Tampines were to play each other in Malaysia, while Singapore Cup champions Warriors FC were to take on cup runners-up ATM FA at the Jalan Besar Stadium on August 13.

FAS said details on the new arrangements will be announced in due course.

In May, the annual Causeway Challenge was also cancelled.

This came after the Malaysians informed FAS that their first and second national teams would be unavailable on the two dates that both sides had earlier agreed on.

Standalone EPL channels to cost $59.90 per month for both SingTel and StarHub viewers

SingTel has announced on Friday the new price plans for the upcoming season of the English Premier League (EPL) which kicks off on August 17.

The ala-carte EPL content, with nine channels, will cost $59.90 per month for both SingTel mio TV users as well as StarHub's pay TV customers, the latter which SingTel is obliged to provide under the cross-carriage regulations.

The price is significantly higher than its old $34.90 per month sports bundle which came with EPL channels, Champions League and other sports content.

However, existing mio TV customers who are still on contract will get to enjoy the old price plan until the expiry of their contracts.

Johor set sights on LionsXII duo

Johor set sights on LionsXII duo

Both Hariss Harun (No 14) and Baihakki Khaizan (No 5) helped the LionsXII win this year's Malaysian Super League. (TODAY file photo)

With a few more months to go before the completion of the 2013 Malaysian domestic football season, but Johor Darul Takzim (DT) are already planning for next year.

Poised to land former Argentina international Pablo Aimar, the big-spending Malaysian Super League (MSL) side now have their sights set on LionsXII midfielder Hariss Harun.

"Hariss is on the list. His defensive qualities make him a standout, which the Johor team lacks," a source with the club told TODAY.

LionsXII defender Baihakki Khaizan is another player thought to be on the radar as Johor DT President Ismail, who is also Crown Prince of the state, announced on the club's Facebook page on Sunday that five new players will be signed to strengthen the squad.

"The team management has reached an agreement with five new players to turn out for Johor DT next season. We are also in talks with a few others in preparation for the new season," said Ismail.

"In line with the Johor Football Association's (FA's) principle of bringing in big names for the team, we are close to reaching an agreement with Pablo Aimar."

Johor Darul Takzim have shown a willingness to pay big money - it reportedly paid Spanish forward Daniel Guiza an annual salary of RM1.6 million (S$640,000), while Malaysian international Safee Sali drew about RM100,000 a month.

Both Hariss and Baihakki helped the LionsXII win this year's MSL, the Singapore side's first Malaysian league title. According to a Johor source, overtures have already been made to the duo. While the move would be a lucrative option for Baihakki - after two seasons with the LionsXII - it could be harder to lure Hariss across the Causeway.

In May, TODAY reported that Jorge Mendes, the agent who represents the likes of Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo, is working towards securing trials for Hariss in Europe, possibly with Portuguese clubs.

Meanwhile, it is unclear whether Fandi Ahmad has been redesignated as Johor DT's assistant coach for the rest of this season, or whether he will step down as head coach in the coming season.

TODAY had reported on its website on Saturday that the club will be replacing Fandi with a Spanish coach, believed to be former Atletico Madrid and Valencia coach Cesar Ferrando Jimenez, with the former Singapore skipper being re-designated as the club's assistant coach.

"For now, we have made the decision to get the services of a new team manager from Spain," said Ismail in the statement. "He is a manager with vast experience, having managed clubs like Valencia and Atletico Madrid. Fandi Ahmad will continue to be with the Johor DT team as assistant coach."

However, according to a club source, the change is only expected to take place next season.

Promoted from the Malaysian Premier League last season, Johor splurged on star names in a bid to win silverware this year.

Apart from Guiza and former Lazio midfielder Simone Del Nero (who were both replaced in April by Argentinian Leonel Nunez and Brazilian Andrezinho), they also acquired the likes of Malaysian internationals Safee, Safiq Rahim and Norshahrul Idlan Talaha.

However, the club finished third in the 12-team MSL, three points behind league champions LionsXII, after faltering in the final stages of the title race, and also lost 1-0 to Kelantan in the Malaysian FA Cup final last month.

Trial of S'porean allegedly involved in match-fixing begins

Trial of S'porean allegedly involved in match-fixing begins

The corruption trial involving Singaporean businessman Eric Ding Si Yang began on Monday morning.

Ding is accused of offering three Lebanese match officials sexual gratification in exchange for them agreeing to rig football matches.

Testifying for the prosecution, the Lebanese referee, Ali Sabbagh, said that he knew Ding as James Zen.

The two had made contact in 2012.

Sabbagh, who is serving a six-month jail term for match fixing, said that Ding emailed YouTube videos showing how to fix matches by awarding penalties.

Ding is charged with three counts of corruption and if found guilty could face a five-year prison term and a fine of up to S$100,000 for each count of corruption.

The trial continues on Tuesday.

Coach Sundramoorthy confident of win against Indonesia

Coach Sundramoorthy confident of win against Indonesia

Coach V Sundramoorthy is expecting a tough match, but is confident of a victory against the Indonesian U-23 team this Saturday.

The Singapore players' familiarity with each other and the Jalan Besar pitch would give them the edge.

With the exception of two players, the rest of the squad comprises the LionsXII outfit that won the Malaysian Super League (MSL) title last week.

Many of the youngsters performed well in the Malaysian League, and they are likely to continue that momentum against the Indonesians - the silver medallist at the 2011 SEA Games.

The result is crucial for the host to get the nod from selectors for the SEA Games in Myanmar.

The coach hopes that his team could also take on defending SEA Games champions Malaysia.

"We love to play Malaysia, but the team is always travelling and they are based abroad. And for us, we have a lot of commitments, Malaysian League and all this. We will see if there is a date set for us, we might be able to play against them," he said.

Hariss Harun, Captain of the Singapore National U-23 Team, said: "I think the boys, even those two boys coming form the S League clubs, they are familiar with us. They play with us NFA, Young Lions and now here in U-23. So I think most of us are very familiar with each other, and confident as a team to go out and get the job done."

David Beckham in Singapore

David Beckham in Singapore

Sixty children on Sunday got to spend time with former England captain David Beckham who was in town to lend his support for Marina Bay Sands' "Sands for Singapore Festival" - an initiative to give back to the community.

The recently retired midfielder also signed a Paris Saint Germain jersey which will be auctioned off for charity.

Beckham spent close to an hour with the 60 children from The Guardian Academy, a local sports institution and students from the Singapore Association for The Deaf's affiliated schools.

"I'm excited to see you all because obviously as you know I have four children and I obviously love them a lot and I've always had a very good relationship with working with children. It's very inspiring seeing you all. It's always inspiring watching children play football or play sports," said Beckham.

He added: "I have great memories of this city as it was it here that London won the 2012 Olympic bid. Coming back and seeing these kids today has been an inspiration to me. I'm honoured to be invited to the Marina Bay Sands and to launch this community sports initiative. This is a beautiful hotel, and Singapore is one of the most forward looking cities in the world."
