Everton land in Singapore for Barclays Asia Trophy

English football side Everton FC touched down in Singapore on Monday (Jul 13), hoping to start its pre-season tour in a positive fashion in the upcoming Barclays Asia Trophy.

The Toffees have brought a 24-man strong squad for their two National Stadium matches, against Stoke City on Wednesday and another with either Arsenal or the Singapore Select XI team on Saturday.

Among the squad are new Everton recruits Tom Cleverley, who has reunited with manager Roberto Martinez from their days at Wigan, and Spanish winger Gerard Deulofeu, who joined the club on a permanent basis in the summer for a reported £4.2 million (S$8.85 million) after a loan stint from Barcelona FC.

Romelu Lukaku, Seamus Coleman and Ross Barkley are all expected to take their place in the side, as Everton build towards the upcoming English season, hoping to go better than their 11th place finish in 2014/15.

Missing from the travelling squad are England left-back Leighton Baines, who is out with an ankle injury, Darron Gibson, who is nursing a wounded foot, and the injury-cursed Bryan Oviedo, still recovering from a toe injury sustained in April.

Kevin Mirallas and James McCarthy feature in the squad, despite rumours the pair are being targeted by Tottenham in the summer transfer window.

Several young players including promising striker Conor McAleny and Luke Garbutt will be looking to build on their fledgling Everton careers.

Arsenal in Singapore for Barclays Asia Trophy

The 27-man squad of English football giant Arsenal FC, including new recruit Petr Cech, arrived in Singapore Monday (Jul 13) ahead of showcase matches this week in the Barclays Asia Trophy friendlies.

Arsenal will take on a Singapore Select XI on Wednesday before an all-Premier League clash against either Everton or Stoke City on Saturday, in a showcase tournament for the clubs’ Southeast Asian fan base.

It is the first time the Gunners have participated in the Asia Trophy and their first visit to Singapore shores since 1991.

"I don't think it's bad - about the heat here - because we want to sweat a little bit," manager Arsene Wenger said. "We want to put the effort in, everyone's fighting for places now so it's an important game already for us.

"You want to win every game and you know a few years ago no-one was interested in preparation but now there's so much," he said. "The pressure is on us to do better."



Arsenal have brought a near-full squad on tour as they kick-start preparations for the upcoming English season, but will be missing the attacking trio of Chilean superstar Alexis Sanchez, last-season recruit Danny Welbeck and Tomas Rosicky.

Sanchez will rest after winning the Copa America on home soil last month, while Welbeck is continuing his recovery from a knee injury.

Olivier Giroud, Mesut Ozil and Jack Wilshere are prime candidates to lead the Arsenal line-up; the latter looking to break back into the starting side after an injury-interrupted 2014-15.



Mikel Arteta also experienced an inconsistent season and said he was hoping to build some good preparation for the year ahead as well as impress the large contingent of Gunners fans in Singapore.

"We've heard it's going to be quite crazy here so we're hoping to have a good experience. We've been in Asia before so we know what it's like," Arteta said.



Fans may get their first glimpse at Cech in a Gunners strip after the Czech goalkeeper completed a 10 million pound (US$15.5 million) transfer from champions Chelsea in the off-season.

He will compete with established number one Wojciech Szczesny for time in goal.

Wenger said he could make a difference to Arsenal's title ambitions when asked why he had signed the veteran stopper. "First of all his talent, his experience and the fact he has won before, that can strengthen the team's belief," he said.

Wenger confirmed he was confident of keeping his three top keepers at the club, despite the increased competition with Cech's arrival.



Wenger is rumoured to be looking to bolster the squad’s defensive assets, with Roma’s Kostas Manolas and Manchester United’s Johnny Evans reported to be transfer targets. "It doesn't depend on my wish, if we can find still one or two players we'll do it," Wenger said.

Established defenders Hector Bellerin, Per Mertesacker, Nacho Monreal, Kieran Gibbs and Mathieu Debuichy are likely to get time on the pitch during Arsenal’s two matches in Singapore.

Wenger said he was not surprised by the £49 million transfer of Raheem Sterling to Manchester City, nor the big money deals secured by Manchester United for Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin.

EPL $59.90/month for both SingTel & StarHub

Standalone EPL channels to cost $59.90 per month for both SingTel and StarHub viewers

SingTel has announced on Friday the new price plans for the upcoming season of the English Premier League (EPL) which kicks off on August 17.

The ala-carte EPL content, with nine channels, will cost $59.90 per month for both SingTel mio TV users as well as StarHub's pay TV customers, the latter which SingTel is obliged to provide under the cross-carriage regulations.

The price is significantly higher than its old $34.90 per month sports bundle which came with EPL channels, Champions League and other sports content.

However, existing mio TV customers who are still on contract will get to enjoy the old price plan until the expiry of their contracts.

Ferguson bows out with emotional home win

Alex Ferguson thanked Manchester United's supporters and urged them to stand behind his successor, David Moyes, after an emotional final home game as manager on Sunday.

Ferguson, who announced his shock retirement earlier this week, addressed supporters directly during an unscripted on-pitch speech after a 2-1 win over Swansea City closed his 26-year association with the Old Trafford dug-out.

"You've been the most fantastic experience of my life," he said, as fans in the crowd of 75,572 fell silent to listen to the man who has brought 38 trophies to the club since arriving from Aberdeen in 1986.

"I've been very fortunate I've been able to manage some of the greatest players in the country, let alone Manchester United. All these players here today have represented the club the proper way and won the championship in fantastic fashion. Well done to the players.

"My retirement doesn't mean the end of my life with the club. I'll be able to enjoy watching them, rather than suffer with them.

"If you think about it, those last-minute goals, those comebacks, even the defeats, are all part of this great club of ours. It's been an unbelievable experience for all of us, so thank you for that.

"I'd also like to remind you that when we had bad times here, the club stood by me, all the staff stood by me, and the players stood by me. Your job now is to stand by our new manager."

Ferguson, 71, later hoisted the Premier League trophy in front of his jubilant players, three weeks after United secured an unprecedented 20th English league title with a 3-0 home win over Aston Villa.

He was then joined on the pitch by his grandchildren, as his players celebrated the 13th league crown of the Ferguson era beneath a steady downpour of rain and red ticker-tape.

Everton manager Moyes will take over as manager on July 1, having signed a six-year contract, with Ferguson taking up a role as a director and ambassador.

Fittingly, an 87th-minute goal by Rio Ferdinand in front of the Stretford End earned United victory, after Javier Hernandez's first-half strike was cancelled out early in the second period by Michu.

Ferguson had earlier been given a guard of honour by players from United and Swansea as he made his way onto the pitch before the game.

The occasion was slightly overshadowed by Ferguson's confirmation that Wayne Rooney has asked to leave the club.

Ferguson dropped the 27-year-old striker from his match-day squad and explained afterwards that he had not been in the right frame of mind to play.

"I don't think Wayne was keen to play because he's asked for a transfer and he wants to think it through in his mind. I think that's a good idea," Ferguson told Sky Sports.

"We're not going to let him go. I think maybe he's a little bit frustrated that he's been taken off once or twice in the last few weeks."

In another sign of the changing times at Old Trafford, Paul Scholes made his farewell appearance after announcing that he is to retire for the second time.

The 38-year-old English midfielder, who returned from retirement in January last year after only seven months out of the game, played for 66 minutes before departing to a standing ovation.

"Today it was just nice to get through the game. I thought Sir Alex handled it well. He has done a fantastic job here," said Scholes, who was only the third United player to make 700 appearances for the club after Ryan Giggs and Bobby Charlton.

The final game of Ferguson's United reign will be at West Bromwich Albion next weekend.

Moyes was given a warm send-off by Everton's fans after his side beat West Ham United 2-0 at Goodison Park in his final home game.

Everton's players formed a guard of honour after the game for Moyes and captain Phil Neville, who is also leaving the club at the end of the season following eight years' service.

"There's always a worry when you're joining another club, but Everton fans were magnificent for me today," Moyes told BBC Sport.

"David Unsworth scored my first goal at Goodison 11 years ago after about 25 seconds and I'm delighted I finished it off here with a win. I thank all the players who have worked with me."

Elsewhere on Sunday, Emmanuel Adebayor scored an 83rd-minute winner for Tottenham Hotspur to snatch a 2-1 win at Stoke City that sent Spurs into the Champions League places at the expense of Arsenal, who host freshly-crowned FA Cup winners Wigan Athletic on Tuesday.

Wigan's hopes of avoiding relegation were compromised after Norwich City beat West Bromwich Albion 4-0 and Newcastle United won 2-1 at relegated Queens Park Rangers to secure their top-flight statuses.

Fulham are all but mathematically assured of escaping the drop despite a 3-1 loss to Liverpool, but Sunderland, who drew 1-1 at home to Southampton, and Aston Villa remain in danger.

SingTel secures BPL broadcasts rights for 3 more seasons

SingTel on Wednesday announced that it has secured the broadcast rights to all 380 Barclays Premier League (BPL) matches for the next three seasons commencing August next year.

These rights were acquired on a non-exclusive basis, meaning that SingTel is not obliged to share the content with their competitors.

Mr Allen Lew, SingTel's country chief officer (Singapore) and CEO of Group Digital L!fe, said: "We are delighted to bring all the BPL matches 'live' to Singapore for another three seasons.

"Along with our recent acquisition of the rights to the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, FA Cup, Serie A, Ligue 1 and other prominent football tournaments, fans can be assured of SingTel's strong commitment to deliver the most comprehensive football experience on mio TV, the home of football."

The matches will continue to be available online on miostadium.com and on mobile via SingTel's BPL application.

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore said: "mio Stadium has provided Singapore fans with great local programming and coverage of the Barclays Premier League action in a comprehensive and innovative manner. We are pleased to be continuing our partnership with SingTel for another three seasons."

In response to SingTel's announcement, StarHub issued a statement saying: "We are surprised that FA Premier League (FAPL) did not conduct a tender for Singapore, departing from all past practice. We will be seeking clarification from FAPL before deciding on our next course of action. We will be keen to acquire the BPL only if the price is right."
