Cristiano Ronaldo in Singapore

Cristiano Ronaldo in Singapore to visit Peter Lim and family

Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo arrived in Singapore on Friday (Jul 21) for a short stopover to visit Singaporean billionaire Peter Lim and his family.

The Real Madrid striker dropped by Thomson Medical Centre to visit longtime friend Lim and his daughter Kim, who gave birth to a baby boy earlier this week.

A weary-looking Ronaldo arrived in a white van at around 10am, jostling his way past fans and bodyguards before making a beeline for the lift heading up to the wards.

Many autograph hunters were left empty-handed, including Jonathan Cheong, 16, who turned up at the hospital decked out in a white Real Madrid T-shirt. The Secondary 4 student was also holding a black marker and two Ronaldo trading cards.

Fifteen minutes after his arrival, security staff crowded the same lift lobby and raised hopes for the dozens of fans there that Ronaldo would make a second appearance. The Portuguese never showed up, instead leaving through a back exit.

Ronaldo's swift exit left many of the waiting fans disappointed.

"Of course, I'm naturally disappointed," said tertiary student Kelvin A. The 17-year-old waited for nearly two hours to see his idol. He added: "But I would definitely do it again."

Lim's Mint Media owns and administers all of Ronaldo's image rights, except for those related to his football club Real Madrid. Lim also owns Spanish La Liga side Valencia.

Ronaldo will sign a major endorsement deal and dine with Lim in Singapore before leaving for China on Friday night.

La Liga launches regional office in Singapore

La Liga launches regional office in Singapore, to bring more teams over

Spain's football league La Liga launched a regional hub office in Singapore on Thursday (Mar 23), as part of its international expansion strategy to popularise the league in Southeast Asia.

Speaking at the press conference during the launch, La Liga's president Javier Tebas said the league wants to tap on the growing presence and popularity of La Liga in this region.

He said: "We are delighted to extend our presence in Asia, and this is the next step in our efforts to grow the sport and La Liga's popularity globally.

"Asia has always been a very important market for us, and we feel that the time is right to grow out presence in the region even further, where we have a huge fan base. I am eagerly looking forward to our visit to Singapore for this historical project."

La Liga said it will focus on investing time and resources through exhibition matches, player visits and grassroots development programmes.

MORE TEAMS TO VISIT SINGAPORE

Among their plans is to bring in more La Liga teams to Singapore. "We’ll definitely be looking into bringing in some of the clubs here for exhibition matches next summer in 2018, as it part of our strategy for growth here,” said Mr Tebas.

Acknowledging that the La Liga would have to compete against the popularity of the English Premier League in Asia, Mr Tebas said there is enough of the viewership pie for everyone. “There is space for everybody, there is a lot of room to grow and there is something for everybody especially in the digital space. This is proven by the fact that last year our viewership audience grew by 40 per cent.”

“In this part of the world, more that 55 per cent of the world’s population lives here. It would be a mistake in our strategy if we don’t reach out to the people in Asia.”

The league's ambassador, former Real Madrid and Liverpool striker Fernando Morientes, said: "I am very excited to be visiting Singapore for the launch of the special project.

"As La Liga ambassadors, our biggest responsibility is to represent the best league in the world and keep our fans engaged with the sport. It's always our endeavour to reach out to supporters, not only in Spain, but also across the world," added the former forward.

This is the league's fourth office in Asia after China, India and Dubai. La Liga said its Singapore office will house a dedicated set of resources to execute its proposed projects in the region.

As soon as La Liga Singapore's office at Great World City's East Tower officially starts work next month, the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) is planning to propose sending a group local youth players for training stints in Spain through the newfound partnership.

According to FAS interim president Lim Kia Tong: "From our initial internal discussions, we’re looking at possibility of getting four of our youth players for a stint there. That’s where I believe we, too, can benefit from this new relationship."

Pirlo at double as Juventus beat Singapore

Pirlo at double as Juventus beat Singapore

Andrea Pirlo's coolly taken first-half double led Juventus to a 5-0 win over Singapore Selection on Saturday (Aug 16) as the Italian champions completed their summer tour with a third straight win.

The elegant player-maker's free-kick and penalty sent Juventus on their way in front of 27,000 fans in what was the first football match at Singapore's new National Stadium.

Coach Massimiliano Allegri, who has recently taken over from newly appointed Italy boss Antonio Conte, said Pirlo had underlined his value to Juventus.

"He played well and I see him as a key player for next season," Allegri told reporters. "He performed well and so did the rest of the team. We have to keep following this direction. This is the last match before the start of the season so let's see what happens when we get back to Italy."

France midfielder Paul Pogba and Sebastian Giovinco both headed against the crossbar and Pirlo had a free-kick saved in the opening minutes as Juventus took immediate control. Their opener came courtesy of some typically quick thinking from Pirlo, who slid another free-kick low and under the leaping wall on 17 minutes.

A minute before half-time, Pirlo doubled Juventus's lead from the penalty spot after Shakir Hamzah's tug on Roberto Pereyra. Pogba had frequently been a threat and he got on the scoresheet on 48 minutes when he rifled Juve's third past busy Singapore goalkeeper Hassan Sunny.

After Sunny's point-blank save from Pereyra, Giovinco hit the visitors' fourth from the resulting corner when he lashed home a fierce shot from the edge of the box. Half-time substitute Kwadwo Asamoah volleyed the fifth and final goal on 72 minutes after good work down the right by Jose Martin Caceres.

On a worn and sandy pitch in the plush new arena, it was a suitably emphatic tour finale for Juventus who earlier won 8-1 in Jakarta and beat Australia's A-League Allstars 3-2. They will now return to Italy before launching their bid for a fourth straight Serie A title away against Chievo on August 30.

Telcos still battling to air World Cup

Telcos still battling to air World Cup

Cable-TV providers SingTel and StarHub told MyPaper that they are still locked in negotiations with Fifa, the sport's world governing body. (FILE PHOTO)

WITH less than five months to go before the World Cup kicks off in Brazil, Singapore's race to bag television rights for the tournament could head into extra time.

At least 208 territories worldwide have already secured the rights, but cable-TV providers SingTel and StarHub told MyPaper that they are still locked in negotiations with Fifa, the sport's world governing body.

Experts and fans are fearing a replay of the 2010 World Cup fiasco, when Singapore's TV deal was reached just 35 days before the first match in South Africa.

Then, Singapore subscribers paid $70 (early-bird price, with GST) each to watch all 64 matches - a four-fold increase from 2006.

The signs are ominous this year.

StarHub has been in talks with Fifa since 2012, and Ms Lee Soo Hui, head of the telco's media-business unit, said several factors have made negotiations "very challenging".

Cost is an obvious stumbling block, and Ms Lee noted that prices for sports content are soaring worldwide.

Time is not on Singapore's side either. Due to the time difference in Brazil, most of the matches for the June 12-July 13 tournament will be played in the wee hours of the morning, making it difficult to attract viewers.

As a result, StarHub "does not expect a strong response from sponsors and advertisers", who can help to defray the cost of the TV rights.

The telco has promised to "acquire the content at a sensible rate, so as to keep the World Cup affordable for the majority of Singapore viewers".

But market forces are at work.

In 2010, SingTel and StarHub reportedly paid about $20 million for the rights, about half of what Fifa was asking for.

In contrast, Singapore's World Cup TV rights were reportedly purchased for around US$5 million (about S$6 million) in 2006.

The price hike is down to the stiff competition between SingTel and StarHub in recent years, said Mr Vivek Couto, executive director at Media Partners Asia.

The wildcard this year will be the Republic's cross-carriage law, which states that pay-TV operators must share exclusive content with one another. This law will further complicate negotiations, said Mr Couto.

A case in point was last year's wrangle over TV rights for the English Premier League. SingTel insisted it did not sign an exclusive deal for the rights, but was still ordered by the Media Development Authority of Singapore to share its 2013-2016 Premier League content with StarHub.

Singapore's other telco, M1, which also has a pay-TV service, said it will not bid for this year's World Cup rights, but is exploring the option of cross-carrying the content.

Meanwhile, tech blogger Alfred Siew believes it is in the telcos' interests to sew up a deal as soon as possible. This will give them more lead time to secure sponsors and come up with more attractive packages for fans.

Said football fan and undergraduate Wei De Wong, 21: "If the rumours are true and if they are going to increase the price again, it will be unacceptable.

"I will just watch it at a friend's house or at a pub. I might even share the subscription costs with my friend."

Inaugural FAM-FAS Championship Series postponed

Inaugural FAM-FAS Championship Series postponed

The inaugural FAM-FAS Championship Series has been postponed until next year.

The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) and the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) jointly decided on the postponement, citing tight domestic competition schedules.

Announced in July by the FAM, the series was to see a one-off match between Malaysia's and Singapore's league and cup champions of the previous season this month.

League champions Kelantan and Tampines were to play each other in Malaysia, while Singapore Cup champions Warriors FC were to take on cup runners-up ATM FA at the Jalan Besar Stadium on August 13.

FAS said details on the new arrangements will be announced in due course.

In May, the annual Causeway Challenge was also cancelled.

This came after the Malaysians informed FAS that their first and second national teams would be unavailable on the two dates that both sides had earlier agreed on.

EPL $59.90/month for both SingTel & StarHub

Standalone EPL channels to cost $59.90 per month for both SingTel and StarHub viewers

SingTel has announced on Friday the new price plans for the upcoming season of the English Premier League (EPL) which kicks off on August 17.

The ala-carte EPL content, with nine channels, will cost $59.90 per month for both SingTel mio TV users as well as StarHub's pay TV customers, the latter which SingTel is obliged to provide under the cross-carriage regulations.

The price is significantly higher than its old $34.90 per month sports bundle which came with EPL channels, Champions League and other sports content.

However, existing mio TV customers who are still on contract will get to enjoy the old price plan until the expiry of their contracts.
